Thursday 6 October 2011--Ron arrives this morning from Seattle, and is settled in at the B&B shortly after noon. I ask him if there is anything he particularly wants to do right away. "A pint would not be amiss," he says. It's a good answer, to my way of thinking. We pop around the corner to the Stockbridge Tap, intending to have one, followed by a nap back at the B&B. We are just finishing our pint when a squall blows through, however, so we order a second. The sun shines again as we enjoy it, but another squall hits as the glasses empty. The cycle repeats again, and soon enough we've had four pints.

On our way out at last, we remark on the oddly convenient weather patterns to Lucy, the barmaid. She smiles and says, "I have a button behind the bar to switch on the rain." We are neither surprised nor particularly unhappy.

We've missed our nap, though, and have to rush through dinner at Milnes, as we are due at a whisky tasting at the Tolbooth Tavern, at the lower end of the Royal Mile. Mark Davidson of the Cadenhead's shop hosts these regularly under the nom de boire The Jolly Toper. We're joined by Bud Light and the estimable Willie, Doctor of Folderol. Ron and I are already a bit more mood-enhanced than is optimal, but no one seems to mind. Mark leads us through a half-dozen different bottlings of Bladnoch, a Lowland favorite.

As we are enjoying some post-event pintery and blether, Ron quietly commences a long overdue trip to Dreamland. [There exists a reasonably embarrassing photo, but it won't appear here.] We let him doze for a while before rousing him for the long walk back to Stockbridge. Off to bed he goes, while Bud and I have a nightcap at the Tap. I expect to be a little blurry in the morning, but that's hardly unusual when I'm in Edinburgh, is it?
