Thursday, 30 October 2008 The taxi arrives promptly at 4:00am to take me to the airport. Change in Amsterdam, and settle in for
the long flight to Detroit. Cloudy over the UK, and eastern Canada, too, but the cloud cover opens up as we enter Ontario airspace.
I have a three-hour layover in Detroit, which seems excessive until I'm on the ground. It takes an hour and a half just to clear customs.
We fly east over Lake Erie, and in the twilight, I have a view of Buffalo, the Niagara River, Hamilton, and the north shore of Lake Ontario. I thought I'd be able to see Toronto, but it's lost in the smog--not even a glint off the Rogers Centre. See the Finger Lakes, Syracuse, Albany, and finally Springfield on the way in to BDL. Bobby meets me at the airport, and we pull into the driveway at 8:00pm EDT, some twenty hours from the taxi's pickup in Edinburgh. It's been a long day, and it seems a very long time since I delivered three slats to Audrey. It's good to be home. 2009 |
