Saturday 2 October--We drive south today, through Haugesund to the island of Karmøy.
At Avaldsnes, we see a reproduction of a Viking longhouse and related buildings, and a standing
stone called Mary's Needle leaning to within inches of the wall of a 13th- century church--legend
has it that when the stone touches
the church, Judgment Day is at hand. We take a stroll and a coffee break in the pretty town of
Skudeneshavn. Just off the island stands an array of standing stones called the Five Virgins, in
the shadow of the bridge.
We decide to return to Bergen via Hardangerfjord, a very scenic route, but a long way
around. We are lucky to get sandwiches for dinner at a hotel in Utne, while waiting for a ferry.
It's almost midnight when we get back to town.
[For some reason, I never got around to scanning photos for
this day. Maybe someday I'll get the slide scanner working again.]
