Sunday 7 October 2001--I got up at 8:30 for breakfast, and then went back to bed. Lack of sleep caught up with me.
Slept until 2:00 and then watched the rebroadcast of the week's episodes of Eastenders. Zoe found out that her older sister Cat is
actually her mother. Then it turned out that Uncle Larry was her father, which no one but Cat knew. All hell broke loose and Cat
attempted suicide. Uncle Larry left town.

Tuesday 7 October 2014--I'm on my way to Stirling today, a drive of about three hours. Detour into Edinburgh for a
shopping foray. I'm lucky enough to find a parking space on the Royal Mile, right in front of the Thistle Do Nicely shop. Plug
the meter for an hour and a half's worth, enough time to pick up eight CDs at Coda, a beard trimmer and a battery charger at Argos,
and two bottles of whisky at Cadenhead. Mission accomplished with minutes to spare.
Arrive in Stirling midafternoon. My usual method of finding the B&B in a new place, by hazy memory of a map seen at time of
booking, fails, and I have to call. The B&B is a mile or so from the center of town, and after checking in, I take a side trip on the
way to see the meager remains of Cambuskenneth Abbey. Then into the town itself--the castle sits at the high end of a volcanic ridge,
much like Edinburgh Castle, although the scale of everything is much smaller. The hill is steeper, though. Just below the castle is a
pub called the Portcullis, a handsome place that provides a good dinner and well-kept pints. I finish the evening with a pint down the
hill at the Crossed Peels, a Wetherspoon's pub that opened just this past July.
