Friday 7 October 2011--Not too surprisingly, we are a bit late getting out today. Our B&B does not serve a formal breakfast, but
our hosts leave a tray outside our room with fruit, yogurt, and sundry other edibles. That suits us fine.
We grab a nibble at the Café Rouge, then head up toward the Royal Mile. I want to shop at Coda, the folk music record shop, and Ron wants to spend some time at the castle. We agree to meet somewhere between here and there, sometime or other. It's never explicitly said, but we both know that means the Bow Bar at 5:00 or so, if nothing else. After picking up a handful of CDs, I stroll down toward the bottom of the Mile and pop into the Cadenhead's shop for a blether with Mark and Neil. Presently Bud appears, and shortly after that, Willie. The next thing you know, we're having an informal whisky tasting. Mark is very gracious, as always. Mark has a parcel that needs to be delivered to Iain at Royal Mile Whiskies, up the street, before closing, and I volunteer to take it. Chat with Iain a bit, then saunter over to the Bow, where Ron is about an inch and a half into his first pint. There's a crowd of gents in shirt and tie at the bar; among them we recognize Tatsuya Minegawa, bar manager at the Highlander in Craigellachie, where as chance would have it we will be eating and drinking in a couple of days. I send him a pint, and he comes over to say hello. He's one of a bunch in town for a blitz whisky judging--no doubt I'd recognize the names of a few of the other gents. Ron and I head back down to Stockbridge, meaning to dine at the Tap, but the kitchen is closed. We try Hector's across the street instead. It's good enough. A pint back at the Tap finishes off a relatively early evening. Next |
