Wednesday 26 October 2011--Sunny clear morning, the kind of weather I always hope for here, and occasionally get. Cross the little bridge over the
burn and walk up through the park to the Abbey for a poke around. I've been in here several times, of course, but I've yet to visit the 7th-century
crypt, the oldest part of the church. I won't today, either--the guy with the keys isn't in.
Stroll around town a bit, stopping in at the visitors' centre, looking for ideas. The idea I get is to go back to bed shortly after noon.
Why not?
Get up midafternoon, pour myself a birthday dram of Bladnoch, and turn on the television, the first time I've done so for the whole trip, I
think. Deal Or No Deal is on. The unfortunate contestant takes a series of what seem to me to be reasonable risks, all of which turn out
badly. She wins £1. Bummer.
After a pint at the Tap & Spile, I go looking for dinner. I'm done with the Forum, but I have yet to find a decent pub with decent food here
in town. End up in the County Hotel, not far down the street. It fills the bill--smoked salmon roulade followed by a grilled pork loin steak, with
a glass of sauvignon blanc. Pints at the Tap & Spile finish the evening. Not a very eventful day, and a typically low-key Mr Tattie Heid birthday,
I guess. I'm happy with it.
