Friday 28 October 2011--The weather has turned again--it's a lovely sunny morning. It seems a shame to spend a couple of hours cleaning out the car and repacking my bags, but it has to be done, and better in sunshine than in rain. My mood is buoyant in any case. I always feel a bit down a few days before the end of my trip, but somehow the last day is usually a good one. At noon, I am up walking along Hadrian's Wall. Park at Steel Rigg and head west, thinking I'd headed east of there last time. A mile or so along, I realize that was two visits ago, and last time I walked east from Cawfields Quarry, covering the same stretch I'm on now, from the opposite direction. No matter. I take a load of photos, no doubt pretty much the same as all the ones I took then. Revisiting well-known subjects is nonetheless entirely worthwhile. The angle of the sun, perhaps, will have changed just that little bit; I may see something new, or something familiar in a different light.

I dine this evening in Hexham's chippy, which is bright and clean, as a chippy should be. More important, it serves good chippy food. The Tap & Spile provides my last pints in the UK for the year.
