Tuesday 28 September 2010--Sleep in late, have a leisurely morning. Arrive at the terminal feeling pretty good. Check in at the desk, pass security, and sit down to reassemble myself. Finish tying my shoes, look up at the board, and see my flight is canceled. Again.

At the gate, the agent tries to find me some alternative that will get me to Newcastle tomorrow, to no avail. He says the cancellation is due to weather--the plane can't get into JFK--which is very hard to believe, given that the weather isn't particularly bad, and all other flights are going without problem. It's hard not to think that Delta isn't being entirely honest. It feels as though their one daily flight from BDL to JFK isn't a very high priority. Bradley has its minuses, too.

Should have gone to Minneapolis yesterday. In any case, I will never, ever book a change through JFK again. This is strike three.

There's another passenger at the desk in the same boat--she's trying to get to Berlin to visit her brother. Saw her here yesterday, too. I offer to split a rental car with her to drive to JFK, and she agrees. Away we go.

Rental cars are yet another thing--Budget quotes us a price of $100 (for less than three hours use of the car), plus about $20 tax. I won't tell you what the final bill is--actually, I don't really know--but it's more than I'm paying for a car for a week ex-Newcastle. Thieves. Worse--lying thieves.

But the trip down goes smoothly, and it's nice to have company. When you do something like this on your own, you keep wondering if you're doing something crazy. My traveling companion seems fairly sane, so I guess I'm all right.

As for JFK, well, to some extent, I'm lucky. I have to jump through a variety of hoops to get reticketed, since I didn't take the first part of my itinerary. The agents I deal with are very helpful, but you'd think no one had ever done anything like this before. Maybe it was crazy. Anyway, I am incredibly fortunate to avoid waiting in two very long lines during the process.

Finally we are in the air, bound for Paris, where I'll change for Newcastle. Another of my favorite airports to get through. Well, I'll deal with that as it comes.
