Monday 1 November 2010--I have a few hours this morning to poke around the city some more before I have to catch the train to the airport.
I haven't really done anything here but walk around--Win and I did more during our involuntary layover here on the way to Norway--but that's
all I really wanted to do. (Yes, I did pass through the Red Light District last night...no, I did not conduct any business.) There's a
morning-after air on the street outside my hotel--small mountains of trash bags waiting for collection, bicyclists streaming
by on their way to work. The carnival stands still and silent. Time to get back to reality.
Breakfast is at a café by the flower market. It's a gray day, and a bit cool, maybe, for al fresco dining, but how can I not? It's probably not so easy to get this table in July. I watch people passing by, and notice that many are lugging carry-ons. I imagine that they are, as I am, enjoying the last hours of a holiday, trying to take in a last few sights, unwilling to let go of it all just yet. At the same time, they are perhaps already planning next year's trip in their heads, thinking about the places they will go and the things they will do. I know I am. 2011 |
