Thursday 17 October 2013--Get out late and have lunch at a café just off the market square. It's market day, and I peruse the offerings, but
it isn't much--a butcher, a fishmonger, a florist, a clothing stall, something else. The slim pickings are a disappointment, given Alnwick's handsome
and spacious market square. Maybe it's just the lateness of the season.
I catch the X18 bus down to Alnmouth and stroll the beach there during a rare sunny break. The sky clouds over again as I explore the village.
It's a pretty place, formerly an important port, before a storm in 1806 messed up the harbor. There are at least two good pubs, the Sun and the Red
Lion. I have pints in both, and dinner in the latter. This would be a really nice place to stay for a few nights, if I could find suitable lodgings.
B&Bs are a bit pricey here.
Catch the X18 back to Alnwick, and enjoy pints in the John Bull.
