Sunday 4 October 2015--Our only plan for the day is to wander around and
see whatever we might see. Led Zeppelin rattle and roll inside my head all day:
"Hey hey, Malmö, the way you move, gonna make you sweat, gonna make you
groove." We pass through Stortorget and Lille Torg on our way to
Kungsparken (King's Park) and Slottsträdgården (Castle Garden). The
castle, Malmöhus Slott, is a massive block of red brick that strikes me as neither
castle-like nor photogenic. We meander south, then east, then back into the old
center, where we circle the surrounding canal. The modern art museum looks
interesting, but we don't feel like paying the price of admission. Sankt Petri
Kyrka--Saint Peter's Church--is open and free, so we have a look.
I'm feeling wiped out, so I go back to the room to nap, and Win goes to see the
museum in the castle. Some time later, he rouses me, and we go to investigate
Peas & Honey, a pub we passed by earlier. We find a homey little local with a
decent choice of beers, reasonably sophisticated but unpretentious--I feel I am
in a genuinely Swedish pub, if there is such a thing, rather than a British
wannabe. Appearances are somewhat deceiving. Peas & Honey is actually
attached to Interpool, the large restaurant/pool hall/sports bar next door.
Peter, the friendly barman, shows us around. We order dinner from the
restaurant's menu, and have a long blether about beer, pubs, Malmö, travel, and
whatever. Isn't this what a pub is supposed to be all about? Peas & Honey is the
one thing I've seen today that makes me think I might want to come back to
Malmö. That's probably not very rational--I know I'm suffering from the peculiar
incuriosity born of jet lag. But if a friendly pub can motivate one to return for a
second look, that can only be a good thing.
Peter has told us about a brewpub in Triangeln, a ten-minute walk south, so we
go to check it out. It's closed on Sundays. We find Restaurang Nyhavn in
Möllevångstorget nearby, and have a last pint there before retiring to our hotel.
