7 October 2015--The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, Denmark was established to conserve the remains of five Viking-era sailing vessels that were scuttled in Roskilde's fjord to help regulate the flow of traffic on the approach to the city, which was Denmark's capital before Copenhagen. The museum has since expanded its mission to building replicas of those five vessels and others that illustrate the history of sailing and boat-building in Scandinavia. The original five were built in different places and had various purposes--fishing, trading, raiding. Here is the Sea Stallion From Glendalough, a replica of a Viking longboat, intended for making war. Analysis of the original indicates that it was built in Dublin in the 11th century. In 2007, the Sea Stallion was sailed from Roskilde to Dublin, and returned the following year.
