Friday 29 September 2023---We have one full day in Tadoussac. I don't really want to take it up entirely with a fjord cruise or a whale watch--I've done enough of those. But I do think Ron should get a glimpse, at least, of the fjord.
First, we drive out of town to the east, on a minor road. This leads to a rather peculiar area of dunes, looking over the river. There's beach down below that's very tempting...but it's a long way down, and we'd just have to trudge back up through the sand. Maybe if I ever come here again, I'll allow a few hours for it.
A dirt road leads up to the main road. We drive northwest, parallel to the fjord, through the town of Sacré-Coeur; then down a side road to the fjordside hamlet of Anse-de-Roche. The cove is lined with summer cottages. Just above the pier is a restaurant called Casta Fjord, closed for the season. The name is a Tintin pun, after the operatic diva Bianca Castafiore, who turns up with amazing regularity in Tintin's adventures, and who has a bit of a thing for Captain Haddock.
We circle back to Sacré-Coeur on dirt roads and find the microbrasserie Chasse Gardée, tucked down a side street, for a pint, before returning to Tadoussac.
Dinner tonight is at the Bistro de la Baie, down by the marina. I haven't eaten here before, and always assumed it was a relatively upscale joint, given its prime location. It turns out to be pretty standard pub food, fish and chips and such. Not bad, but nothing really special.
