Tuesday 10 October 2000--I arrived in Barnard Castle at about 4:00 and wasted an hour looking for a room. There was none to be had. I felt a bit gloomy as I drove off with no particular plan. A speck on the map to the south, labeled Reeth, looked like it might be interesting. Or not.

It is. There are moments when you don't get what you want, but end up with something better. The Kings Arms charged me thirty pounds for a room, more than I'd like, but I'm not complaining. This is the best place I've stayed, in a beautiful setting, with good food and good beer. I may stay a day or two.

Friday 10 October 2014--We're mildly sorry this morning, but a Plockton session is always worthwhile. We've planned a quiet day for Ron's first day over, anyway. Hang around town, walk out to the island at low tide, and enjoy a lunch of Cullen skink at Plockton Shores.

It's been ten years or so since I last took Calum's seal watch trip, and Ron has never done it, so off we go at 2:00. Calum recognizes me and asks if I've been on the boat before. I tell him I have, and am waiting to see if he tells the same stories he did ten years ago. It's a lovely couple of hours out on the water.

We have dinner at the Plockton Hotel and retire early.
