Saturday 27 September 2025--We're going to Ministers Island today to see Covenhoven, the summer home of Sir William Van Horne, the man who got the Canadian Pacific Railroad built. Van Horne was a remarkable character; he dropped out of school in Illinois at age 14 to work his way up through the railroad business. Despite the brevity of his education, he was well-versed in a variety of the finer aspects of life--music, art, food and drink, all largely self-taught. I'll refer you to what I wrote about him and about Covenhoven on 23 May 2022 for a fuller picture of this extraordinary man.
Dinner this evening is at the Gables, another restaurant with a waterfront patio. I don't know why I've never been in that one before...maybe just because it's up the other end of town. To be clear, it's a block and a half past St Andrews Brewing. We have a pint at the latter, and then retire to our own patio to watch the falling tide and the fading light on the bay, on our last evening on the road.
