Thursday 19 October 2017--The drive straight from Plockton to Fortrose is not long, so we had time to take a roundabout route via Applecross. The road around the northern coast of the Applecross peninsula was completed in 1975. Before that, the only road route to the town of Applecross was over the Bealach na Bà, a mountain pass impassable in winter. We stop in Shieldaig for coffee--the village seemed idyllic in the sunshine and calm. The last time I was there, a fierce wind was blowing the wheelie bins down the street.
The northwest of Scotland is being discovered. There is a tourism scheme called the North Coast 500, and it's drawing more and more people to the area. It's good for the local economy, of course, but I'm left with the feeling that another one of my favorite undiscovered places is about to be overrun by tourists.
