Tuesday 8 October 2013--Time for a walk. St Cuthbert's Way runs 62 miles from Melrose to Lindisfarne, passing through the Yetholms. I cross the bridge and turn up the main street of Town Yetholm, stopping in the shop for a postcard. When I passed through here three years ago, I had the impression that Kirk Yetholm was the more charming village. Now, with my feet on the ground, I feel the opposite. I take note of the Plough Hotel--I'll pop in later--and the several thatched-roof cottages along the street, a rarity in Scotland.

The trail leaves the road south of the village and travels up over a series of small hills, giving views over the Border country. The summit is Wideopen Hill, at 1207 feet the highest point on St Cuthbert's Way, as well as the midpoint. Down the other side, the trail follows road again into the village of Morebattle. I may have driven through here before, but don't recall for sure...things do look different when you're on foot. It's a handsome place, anyway, and I poke around for a while before having a pint at the Templehall Inn at the edge of the village.

I make the return walk along the road, shorter (four and a half miles, compared to seven and a half) and more level then the trail over the hills. Shower and return to the Plough in Town Yetholm for dinner. I like it...if I stay around here again, I may try to find a B&B here in the Town.
