Sunday 13 October 2013--Mostly sunny this morning, and I'm planning to
take a walk along a previously unseen stretch of Hadrian's Wall. Drive west to
Haydon Bridge, then wander along some narrow lanes on the north side of the
valley. Almost have a head-on with some clown speeding around a blind bend.
I pull into the car park at Cawfields Quarry, planning to walk west. Suddenly
realize that I've neglected to bring sufficient change for the pay-and-display lot.
(The fee, six pounds, may seem a bit steep, but it covers all lots along the wall, all
day.) The wind goes out of my sails. To be honest, there wasn't much to begin
with--my mood has been teetering on the edge for a couple of days. End up
taking a drive out past Vindolanda Roman Fort and Lanercost Priory, either of
which would be worth a visit; but I don't want to get out of the car. Kate Rusby
feeds my melancholy on the car stereo. The sky turns gray and misty, making me
feel less bad about wasting the day. Return to Corbridge and take a nap.
Dinner at the Black Bull, Pints at the Angel. I like Corbridge, but think I'll stay
in Hexham next time through.
