Monday 22 October 2018--Norwegians ruled the western isles of Scotland from the 9th century until the 12th, when Somerled, founder of Clan Donald and himself half Scandinavian, cast off Viking rule. The MacDonalds ruled as Lords of the Isles for another three centuries, eventually losing sovereignty to the king of Scotland. Finlaggan was Somerled's home, and the nearby Council Island was the site of a Scandinavian-style thing (or ting, or þing), essentially the administrative center of an empire that stretched from the Butt of Lewis to the Isle of Man. I brought the lads here today, to what has to be counted as one of the very few most significant historic sites in Scotland.
