Tuesday 1 October 2019--I have a four-hour layover in Dublin early this
morning. Could have taken a shorter one, but I wanted to be sure of the
connection, and I know there isn't any point in arriving at my hotel too early--if
my room isn't ready, I'll just have to kill time somewhere. I might simply nod off in
the lobby, but I'm not sure the small hotel I'm staying at even has one. So I kill
time in the airport instead, and find the terminal amenities are not as extensive
as I'd hoped. At least there is a place to sit and plug in the laptop.
Boarding time finally comes. Once we are all settled in our seats, we're told we
will have a 45-minute delay before departure, due to air traffic control issues at
Schiphol, outside Amsterdam. Bloody hell. An hour and forty minute flight will
now be close to three hours on the plane.
Once landed, I take the train to Enkhuizen, a town thirty miles or so north of
Amsterdam. The trip takes about an hour and a half, including a change at
Sloterdijk. Arrive at about 4:30 and find my hotel, a short walk from the station.
Check in and take a three-hour nap. I chose my lodgings, Herberg De
Compagnie, for several reasons, not least that the proprietor is a beer
enthusiast, and the bar features twenty-one taps. There are always reservations
about staying above the bar of a small hotel, but my room is in a wing away from
the bustle, and it's of a decent standard. A good mattress is a wonderful thing.
The hotel restaurant is good enough, too, so there is no need to go out on my
first jet-lagged (and rainy) night. I don't know why I order a chicken dish with
peanut sauce, though...I don't like peanut sauce. It's like they slathered the
chicken with peanut butter. I'm happy there is good beer to wash it down,
including old favorite La Chouffe. Multiple glasses might be necessary.
